1994

Joint venture between ContiTech and the Slovakian company, Vegum, in the production of rubber extrusions for the European automotive industry. In 1996, the agreement is extended to include moulded products.

1995

The Continental Automotive Systems division is established to intensify the systems business with the European automotive industry.

ContiTech takes over the power transmission products activities of TBA Belting Ltd., Wigan, Manchester, UK. The newly established company, ContiTech Power Transmission Systems Ltd., is the ContiTech Group's first plant in the UK.

1997

Continental presents ISAD (Integrated Starter Alternator Damper) for which it receives the German Industry's Innovation Award. The energy management platform combines the functions of the starter, the alternator and a damper to minimize motor vibrations. This space-saving electric aggregate is integrated in the powertrain, eliminating the need for conventional starter and alternator.

1998

Continental acquires the Automotive Brake and Chassis unit from a US company. The core of this globally recognized auto industry partner for brakes and chassis management systems is the company Alfred Teves GmbH in Frankfurt (photo). Continental Teves, which includes plants, research centres and test tracks, is integrated into the Continental Automotive Systems division.

1998/99

Continental expands its position in the global tire market: technology transfer with Fate, Argentina; joint venture for the production of commercial tires with the Slovakian company Matador, acquisition of production facilities and outlets of Grupo Carso, Mexico; and the takeover of 60% of the South African manufacturer Gen Tire, now operating under the name of Continental Tyre South Africa. The first non-European assembly site for complete wheels is opened in Juiz de Fora, Brazil. Further steps on the way towards internationalizing ContiTech's operations are the purchase of conveyor belt plants in Chile and Mexico, as well as the build-up of manufacturing facilities in Brazil (photo), Mexico and Hungary

2000

A new plant for passenger tires starts production in Timosoara, Romania (photo).

Continental Teves enters into an extensive partnership with the Japanese conglomerate Nisshinbo in the field of brake and chassis systems for the Japanese and Korean markets. The joint venture, in which Continental holds a 51% stake, operates under the name Continental Teves Corporation.

2001

With the acquisition of Temic GmbH, Nuremberg (photo), Continental ensures itself new chances in the strongly growing vehicle electronics market. The company, which also has production sites in America and Asia, is integrated into the Continental Automotive Systems division.Continental Teves Corporation, Japan, takes over the majority holding in Shin-Ei and Shin Tec, manufactures of brake actuation components and disk brakes. These products complete Continental's full range of brake components in Japan.

ContiTech acquires a 51% stake in a Chinese manufacturer of hose assemblies. The joint venture company, operating under the name ContiTech Grand Ocean, produces air-conditioning and power steering hose assemblies in China. This brings the total number of ContiTech's joint ventures in China to four.

2002

Continental and Bridgestone announce that they will be cooperating on run-flat tire systems with the goal of creating a worldwide standard for run-flat tire systems installed on conventional rims.

Continental and Yokohama sign an agreement for Closer Corporation in the tire business in the future. A 50:50 joint venture company is established to promote activities geared towards Japanese carmakers.
