In the area of occupant safety systems, we are developing safety electronics that decisively reduce the risk of accident and the danger of injury to vehicle occupants and other road-users, such as pedestrians. Pre-crash sensors play a crucial role in this new technology. In the near future, vehicles will be able to recognize and evaluate a possible collision at an early stage by means of sensors. Then, passive retaining systems, such as airbags and seat-belt tensioners, will be activated according to need on the basis of this information. Our aim is the conception of an intelligent overall system to avoid injury and the networking of active and passive safety, as it is also represented in the APIA Project. |
