The adaptive cruise control system can work on the basis of radar or infrared signals.

Radar Technology

Properties of our radar systems:

• 77 GHz radar according to the pulse modulated Doppler principle for independent measurement of speed and distance
• Sharp beam focusing to separate objects
• Fully-integrated electronic design (high frequency-circuits in the radar component)

Our ACC is under continous further development - the 2nd generation is available now: it is more favorably priced, designed even more compactly and offers extended functionality and a robust resistance to interference caused by signals from external sources. The costly radar option will continue to offer unmatched performance in certain respects. As such, it is predestined for the luxury car segment.

Infrared Technology

We have already been represented on the market with an infrared-based ACC since 2000. The price permits the use also in middle class vehicles. And it also offers a further safety-related function: in case of fog, snowfall or heavy rain, the sensor system is able to determine the actual visibility and suggest a speed to the driver which is appropriate for the prevailing weather conditions.

Further development

The new systems will permit longitudinal control until the point of a standstill. These are also logical means of assistance in city traffic or Stop & Go traffic conditions. To ensure a 100 % detection of objects ahead of the vehicle the ACC sensors will be supplemented by 24 GHz radar sensors for close distance measurements.
