Ildiko Kovacs at Continental

Ildiko Kovacs

"At Continental, employees are able to develop in an international environment, bring in their own ideas and help shape the corporation's future."

How long have you worked at Continental?
Since April 2004

How did you come to join the company?
After training for one year in the Corporate Communications department of another automotive supplier in Germany, I was looking for a new challenge in the field of communications. I wanted to stay in the automotive industry and work for an international corporation if possible. So I applied speculatively to Continental for a position as a PR coordinator in my home town of Timisoara, Romania. I accepted Continental's job offer because it was the most exciting and just the challenge I was looking for.

What is a typical work day like for you? Is there such a thing?
In a press department, no day in like any other. This is primarily because the priorities are changing all the time. As communicators, we have to react very quickly to events, so the planned agenda often changes at very short notice.

You are Romanian and work for Continental in Hanover. Why did you want to work abroad?
I worked for Continental in Romania for four years before my current job. I coordinated the PR office and, in my role as press officer for the corporation in Romania, I provided information to the international, national and local media. It was very interesting to work in operations. I had a wide range of tasks including external communication, internal communication and event management. My previous job was very exciting and there was plenty of opportunity for me to develop. The move to the corporation's headquarters was the logical next step in my career, in order to gain international experience.

What do you think of the Germans? What are the differences between Romanians and Germans?
In general, I would say that my fellow countrymen are more emotional in everything they do. In professional terms, there are no longer any major differences between the two nations. Romania is a future market that has grown at a very rapid pace.

How do you rate the career opportunities within Continental?
If you are passionate about your job, if you identify with the corporation's vision and if you focus on performance, you will find excellent career opportunities at Continental.

Why should people choose a career at Continental?
Continental is one of the world's largest suppliers to the automotive industry and it focuses on high tech and leadership in all areas. I still find it very exciting to work for Continental, even after five years.

What skills are required for a successful career at Continental?
From the shop floor right up to the top management, employees are encouraged to show initiative and take on responsibility. Team spirit is also important, since success cannot be achieved single-handedly.

How do you strike a balance between work, free time and family?
I am passionate about my job, but I always make sure to find the right balance between my private and professional life.

How do you spend your free time?
I have lots of hobbies and interests. I take part in sports such as aerobics and swimming and also enjoy traveling. I make the most of the cultural events on offer in Hanover and enjoy going to jazz concerts, to the opera or theater. I am also still in the process of really getting to know Northern Germany.

How do you envision your professional future at Continental?
My current position is very interesting. However, it is still my aim is to progress further. Time will tell what the future brings!
