Official Sponsor Continental supports the project “Road to South Africa“

12/04/2009 Three adventurers have 2010 FIFA World Cup™ on their mind and Africa in their hearts

Hanover (pps) “I have football on my mind – and Africa in my heart.” That’s how Andreas Wiese describes his present situation. And that’s why the 35-year old fan of Germany’s football club Hamburger SV (HSV) has been thinking about just one thing for the past months: And that’s not flying to Johannesburg to watch the opening game of the World Cup but to experience the African continent. Together with his two friends Oliver Franke (47), managing director of the travel agency “Franke Spezialreisen”, as well as David Gohla (29), he will be travelling about 25.000 kilometres from Hamburg to Johannesburg by cross-country vehicles.

The three adventurers will be supported in the project “Road to South Africa” by Continental – one of the Official Sponsors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Europe’s leading tire manufacturer will equip the Kia Sorento used for the tour with 4x4-summer tires ContiCrossContact UHP for the first section of the track from Hamburg to Casablanca. In Morocco, there will be a changeover to the ContiCrossContact AT which is a real all-terrain-4x4-tire, especially designed for cross-country drives.

The three men are meticulously preparing their project. Route planning, visa application, vaccinations… It’s planned to enter African soil in Morocco and to travel to Johannesburg via Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia to arrive on schedule for the opening game on June 11, 2010 at Johannesburg. The “Road to South Africa” campaign will presumably be started on April 5 in Hamburg.

Alexander Lührs, head of media and public relations for passenger car tires at Continental: “We still like remembering the summer fairy tale 2006 and are enthusiastic about the idea that three Germans do not only want to fly to Africa just for some football match but to literally experience the continent from north to south and from west to east, as natural as possible. We are therefore supporting this venturous and exceptional project as tire partner, parallel to our own World Cup guest programme that will exclusively be offered in Johannesburg. With the help of various football experts from our network, we will try to arouse great interest for the ”Road to South Africa“ campaign among the football and Africa fans by some additional events. We are curious to see if the anticipation after the group drawing for the World Cup on December 4 will be as great as it has been four years ago.”

At present, there is a raffle at www.autobild.de/rtsa to offer a team of two friends the opportunity to accompany the three adventurers on the last section of the route from Tanzania to Johannesburg, which is scheduled to last two weeks as from May 27, 2010. Just upload an individual video and hope that your application will convince the jury. An own website for the project has already been generated in German and English at www.road-to-south-africa.de where the three adventurers are reporting about their preparations and the various planned activities in words and images.

On the way to the World Cup 2010, they will thus give an insight into the fascinating African football culture – with reports and videos updated daily, linked parallel to the diverse network-platforms, like for example Facebook. Of course, there is also a detailed report about the tour on the soccer-website of Continental at www.ContiSoccerWorld.de and www.ContiSoccerWorld.com.

Continental is market leader for passenger tires in Europe. In the original equipment market, even more than 30 percent of all European new cars are leaving the factory fitted with Continental tires.
