“Wolves” and “Devils” out to scupper repeat dream final

Two years and five days after the memorable spectacle of a defeated, and frustrated FC Bayern Munich, a repeat of the “dream final” is again on the cards. Three-time DFB Cup champions Borussia Dortmund against 16-time record-winning Bayern Munich – a meeting of the two recently most successful German clubs could happen again at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 17, 2014. It would be the same DFB Cup final as on May 12, 2012, when BVB sensationally won 5-2 ...

Kaiserslautern, Bayern, Dortmund, Wolfsburg make the semi-finals

The dream DFB Cup final, to take place in Berlin on May 17, 2014, has become increasingly more likely. As at the 2013 Champions League final in London, and the 2012 German Cup final, there could well be another, last and decisive battle of giants this year between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund ...

Cup classic: Hamburg drawn against Munich

Seven Bundesliga teams headed by the leading three Munich, Leverkusen and Dortmund plus second division 1. FC Kaiserslautern have all progressed to the last eight of the DFB Cup. The women’s national coach Silvia Neid pulled the teams out of the hat on Sunday (8 December) and in doing so renewed the cup rivalry between two of Germany’s top teams as Hamburg SV will take on cup holders FC Bayern Munich. Borussia Dortmund will be away to Eintracht Frankfurt whilst 1899 Hoffenheim will host VfL Wolfsburg. 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the only remaining second division club left in the competition, will travel to Bayer Leverkusen. The quarterfinal matches will be played on 11 and 12 February.

Saarbrücken try to shock BVB

It will be the biggest highlight in the club’s recent history: 1. FC Saarbrücken will host the German championship runners-up and Champions League losing finalists, Borussia Dortmund. Four weeks before the match on 3 December (Tuesday), the former Bundesliga team announced that there will be a capacity crowd in the Ludwigspark stadium. Three wins for outsiders: Bayern comfortable winners

One of the five steps en route to the big red-letter day in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on 17 May 2014 has once again been taken. Ten clubs from the top Bundesliga division, five from the second and one from the third have reached the last 16 to be played on 3/4 December 2013. 1. FC Saarbrücken, a Bundesliga team for a total of five years in the league’s four different phases, is the only non first or second division team to progress to the next round. The club, which had already knocked out Werder Bremen, defeated second division SC Paderborn 2-1 (1-0). It is the first time they have gone so far in the “Deutsche Fußball Bund’s” (DFB – German Football Association) cup competition since 1994. Things aren’t going well for FCS in the league where, after seven games without a win, they are last but one

Darmstadt-Schalke: a rematch

FC Schalke 04 came very close to being on the wrong end of a major upset. Playing third division SV Darmstadt in front of a sell-out crowd at the Böllenfalltor stadium, the Champions League participants only just scraped through in extra time. The “Lilies” were more than a match for Schalke, who were down to ten men for over an hour after having one of their players sent off. “We’re satisfied. We wanted to get to the next round. And that’s what we’ve done, even though we were a bit lucky,” said Schalke’s coach. “It was a real blood and thunder cup game. Our problem was that we once again didn’t take our chances.” The previous lines are a short preview for this year’s DFB Cup second round match on Wednesday, 25 September and not a prognosis. It is a look back – an almost historical document dating back to 12 December 2001

Football festivals in the country

They are true red letter days in the lives of smaller clubs. For the 36 professional clubs the DFB Cup goes hand-in-hand with the word “Berlin” as the final of the 79th edition of the cup will be staged in the Olympic Stadium in the German capital on 17 May 2014. Bayern want the treble, Stuttgart a sensation

The chances of Vfb Stuttgart winning their fourth DFB Cup title range from bad to miserable, but the Swabians are nevertheless keen to grab the opportunity. Not only among the many millions of fans of the German club with the record number of both championship and DFB Cup victories it is clear for all that FC Bayern Munich should achieve the treble at Berlin Olympic Stadium on June 1, after winning the national title and triumphing in the Champions League. “We are definitely the outsiders, but that’s a role we will cherish”, said VfB coach Bruno Labbadia, and then jokingly: “We certainly won’t thrash them”. He would rather, of course, be in Bayern’s favourite role, he disclosed ...
