Outsiders looking to cause new upsets

Berlin’s Athletik-Klub 07 is hoping for a second major coup. After BAK’s, as the club is commonly known, sensational 4-0 win against first division 1899 Hoffenheim in the first round of the DFB Cup, the fourth division side, who play in the Regionalliga Northeast, is now planning to catapult the next professional club out of the competition. The football section of the sports club based in the Berlin suburb of Wedding will therefore be looking to chalk up the biggest win in its history by beating second division TSV 1860 München on 30 October.

However, the amateurs have been forced to move to another venue in order to stage the DFB Cup second round match (Tuesday, 30 October / Wednesday, 31 October). BAK’s home ground, the so-called “Poststadion” doesn’t have floodlights. As the game will kick-off at 7.00 pm (local time), Berliner AK will move to the 20,000 capacity Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in the Prenzlauer Berg suburb. The unfamiliar terrain is not the only disadvantage. One of the cup heroes has been sidelined as defender Denis Osadchenko has partially torn cruciate ligaments in his left knee.

Though BAK caused the biggest upset, it was only one of many in the opening round of the 2012/13 cup competition. Alongside Hoffenheim other Bundesliga clubs to be knocked out were Bremen, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Greuther Fürth and Hamburg – the biggest number of teams for more than two decades. Twenty years ago the top clubs played each other but this time around they were mainly “victims” of lower league sides. The two other fourth division teams still in the mix now also face ones from the Bundesliga’s second tier: TSV Havelse will play VfL Bochum, Wormatia Worms will be at home to 1. FC Cologne.

Bremen’s conqueror Preußen Münster will welcome the Bundesliga’s FC Augsburg. Karlsruhe SC, who knocked out Hamburg SV in the first round of the competition, will face MSV Duisburg, the 2011 beaten finalists. Kickers Offenbach will be up against Union Berlin. The draw, which was made by Hansi Flick, national coach Joachim Löw’s assistant, and actress Sophia Thomalla also handed Borussia Dortmund, the cup holders, a visit to second division VfR Aalen.

Top match is the Düsseldorf-Gladbach Lower Rhine derby

A match with a long tradition is the one between Bayern Munich and second division 1. FC Kaiserslautern. However, the encounter would have certainly attracted a far bigger crowd in the Betzenberg stadium than in Munich’s Allianz Arena. In addition to Bayern, five other first division clubs will host ones from the league immediately below. FC Schalke 04 is home to promoted Sandhausen, FSV Mainz 05 will take on Erzgebirge Aue, VfB Stuttgart has a tough task ahead of them when they play FC St. Pauli, Hanover 96 will meet Dynamo Dresden and VfL Wolfsburg will do battle against FSV Frankfurt. With the exception of VfR Aalen (against Dortmund), only Eintracht Braunschweig, the second division table-toppers, will be playing host to a Bundesliga team, namely SC Freiburg. It’ll give them perhaps an early chance to experience what it feels like when taking on first division opposition.

Also interesting is the match between third division Arminia Bielefeld, who graced the Bundesliga until only recently, and the top league’s Bayer Leverkusen.

However the second round’s big highlight is the Lower Rhine Bundesliga derby between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday 31 October (kick-off 8:30 local time). The match will be televised live on the national ARD channel. Sky will also show the game live. The two played out a goalless draw in their league encounter in September but there will definitely be goals in the DFB Cup game – in the penalty shoot-out at the latest should extra time also remain without goals.
