Record breaking Bayern march on

FC Bayern Munich are marching to new records in a golden autumn, while impressing their many millions of supporters as well as their competitors. In the Bundesliga the record-winning German champions continued their excellent winning ways unperturbed by a two-week international break. The Bavarians set a new Bundesliga seasonal start record when they thrashed Fortuna Duesseldorf 5-0 (2-0) away. Eight victories in as many matches since the first kick-off – a feat no other club has achieved before this 50th Bundesliga season – which not even the best Bayern teams achieved. The Munich team had won eleven Bundesliga games in a row after the weekend of October 20-21.

“Records don’t mean anything to me. Records are for the statistics”, said coach Jupp Heynckes before the match.

However, he was very pleased after the final whistle. “We played excellent football from the first to the last minute. That’s our best game this season”, Heynckes commented in praising his players. “The team is unique”. Mario Mandzukic (28th), Luiz Gustavo (36th), Thomas Mueller (55th and 86th) and Rafinha (87th) scored for Bayern to give the Bundesliga newcomers from Dusseldorf little chance. “Winter, summer and spring must come together if we want to beat these Bavarians”, said Fortuna coach Norbert Meier.

And the 2011 and 2012 national champions Borussia Dortmund also admired FC Bayern. The Bavarians increased their lead over the title holders to twelve points with their victory in Dusseldorf, and Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Schalke 04 in the Ruhr Derby. Statistics disclose that no team has ever finished champions after falling twelve points behind. Last year, however, Dortmund managed to win the title after being eight points behind Bayern.

Brilliant Franck Ribéry, who assisted in three goals and was the best player throughout with Thomas Mueller, was also very happy with the walkover in Dusseldorf. “Currently it’s simply fun. It is important that we always remain focussed”. Three days after that national record FC Bayern returned to the international stage with a victory. The team achieved their second win in the Champions league when defeating OSC Lille 1-0 (1-0) away. The Germans had suffered their only, very surprising defeat of the season to Belorussian outsiders Bate Borissov (3-1). After their win in northern France, Thomas Mueller was particularly happy for he was the “Match Winner” after netting a penalty in the 20th minute. The 23-year-old had previously scored six goals in seven Bundesliga matches to become the league’s second-best goalscorer behind Mandzukic (seven goals).

Robben rethinks intentions to retire to make a comeback

“This game won’t go down in the history books. We’ll tick it under the title ‘acquired win’”, said Bayern executive Rummenigge, and with two of their last three group matches at home he was confident “we can look hopefully to the future in the Champions League too”. The mood was also good during dinner at the hotel. Bastian Schweinsteiger sneered somewhat at the curious, but cunning way Mueller had netted the penalty. Mueller reacted laughing: “You have possibly never seen a penalty converted”. Schweinsteiger had missed the decisive penalty in the Champions League final against Chelsea last May.

The Bavarians were slightly worried when Ribéry had to be substituted at halftime against his former club OSC Lille due to muscle problems. The Frenchman had managed to balance out Arjen Robben’s long injury break. The Dutchman has been missing since the end of September due to muscular problems in the thigh. Munich hope that he will be in the team for the second round DFB Cup match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Wednesday (October 31). Robben may possibly be rested against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga (October 28), when the record should be further increased.

The striker’s frustration with the long, baffling injury was so great that he even thought about ending his career. Robben mentioned that in an interview with a Dutch TV channel. But he quickly back-pedalled.

The Dutch international, with whom FC Bayern could possibly be even stronger, said that he would continue. Heynckes attested his team has produced the “choicest football”. And that should even be topped.
