Car Tyres: Tyre Pressures
Better handling, better braking and helping you to be greener, too
Having the right tyre pressures is vital for winter driving safety. Incorrect pressure levels can seriously affect the handling, braking, tyre life and the fuel consumption of your car - and we could all do with saving a bit of money on fuel. British Touring Car Championship racer Fiona Leggate shows how and when to check your tyre pressures, ensuring your car tyres are fit this winter...
Car Tyre Pressure Top Tips
- Make sure you check your tyre pressures at least every two weeks or before long journeys
- For an accurate reading use a digital pressure gauge, available from most motoring retailers
- Recommended pressures may be different for front and rear tyres, so consult your handbook for the recommended pressures
- If you are carrying a heavy load, you may need to add more air to your tyres, check your manual for more information
- Your tyres should be 'cold' to get an accurate reading so don't check them after prolonged periods of driving
- If using a public air hose, make sure you take your valve caps off and keep them in a safe place before starting the machine
- Always replace the valve caps after checking the pressures
- If you need to release excess tyre pressure, press down on the valve with either the cap or a small screwdriver and let out as much air as required but remember to check them again to make sure you haven't taken out too much.
