New winter truck tyres provide excellent traction on ice and snow

Optimum grip and the best possible traction in a wide range of winter conditions are two of the benefits of the new Continental truck tyres HDW 2 SCANDINAVIA (Drive) and HSW 2 SCANDINAVIA (Steer).
Providing up to ten percent more grip than its predecessors on snow-covered roads, the new Continental winter tyres for drive and steer axles make a substantial contribution to keeping vehicles safe and deliveries on time in extreme weather conditions. Winter roads can set extremely tough challenges for truck tyres, varying from snow to ice and dry to wet conditions in quick succession. To address these challenges Continental has designed two specially configured types of winter tyre for use on the steer and drive axles. The new SCANDINAVIA products feature particularly dense tread geometry and a new tread compound with a micro-tooth effect to guarantee good handling. An intelligent tread design with numerous lateral sipes also ensures safe traction on the road surface. The new winter tyres provide optimum grip even on a compacted layer of snow thanks to their large number of gripping edges. The tyres on the drive axle need to master numerous challenges on wintry surfaces: steady drive power transmission, directional control on corners and transfer of the power from the brakes or truck retarder. The newly designed HDW 2 SCANDINAVIA meets these demands with special tread geometry and numerous jagged lateral sipes on the directional pattern, which provides an ideal number of gripping edges on the road surface. The three-dimensional sipes effectively support the tread blocks against the forces from the drive retarder and wheel brake system. In this way, the HDW 2 winter tyres achieve the best possible traction and braking force transfer. The open design of the tyre shoulders guarantee the best grip and directional control on snow-covered roads. Up to 3.0 millimetres of additional tread depth than the previous tyre ensures extended mileage with consistently good traction values. The tread pattern on the steer axle, the new HSW 2 SCANDINAVIA, is distinguished by the pocket-shaped radial grooves which provide greater water drainage and stable steering. The new ribbed tread of the HSW 2 SCANDINAVIA has lateral sipes that open upon contact with the road surface. This ensures side support and grip on slippery roads thanks to the large number of gripping edges. The wide shoulder rib with additional lateral sipes supports the tyre against the lateral forces occurring on corners. Over the course of their working life, the new Continental winter tyres for steer and drive axles are transformed from winter specific tyres into tyres for all-year usage. Thanks to the two-phase tread design developed by Continental, the tread pattern gains a considerably higher positive proportion as wear progresses, which directly benefits the stability of the truck. In terms of fuel consumption, the new SCANDINAVIA winter tyre is able to distinguish itself from conventional winter tyres thanks to the rolling resistance of the two-phase tread. The increased wear volume of the new tyre extends the total mileage and thus reduces running costs noticeably. The winter tyres also benefit from the innovative casing technology of all Continental’s series 2 tyres. This is characterised by a four-ply triangular belt casing with newly designed steel cord bead as well as a larger air volume for increased load reserves and additional comfort. The new models from the SCANDINAVIA series use Continental’s patented AirKeep® technology which prevents gradual loss of inflation pressure by up to 50 percent. The new Continental HSW 2 SCANDINAVIA steer-axle tyre is available in the sizes 385/55R22.5, 385/65R22.5, 315/70R22.5, 295/80R22.5 and 315/80R22.5. The new Continental HDW 2 SCANDINAVIA drive-axle tyre is available in the sizes 315/70R22.5, 295/80R22.5 and 315/80R22.5. |
