Mercedes-Benz Gets the Networked Know-How from Continental for New M- and R-Classes

Continental today announced the continuation of its close cooperation with Mercedes-Benz, providing a range of parts for the new M-Class and R-Class. The new models will be fitted with the latest Continental premium technology, from brake systems and Adaptive Cruise Control to the special ContiCrossContact UHP tyre, which has been tailored especially to meet the requirements of the powerful 4x4 vehicles.

Richard Durance, Continental's Key Account Manager for Original Equipment said “The decision to equip these two key mass-produced vehicles with our technologies in such a large scale really, speaks volumes about the quality and high standard of our products. It’s great that we have been able to provide the networked Continental know-how in a way that is both time and cost-effective to such an important customer as Mercedes-Benz.”

Mercedes-Benz has selected the ESP MK25 brake system for the M-Class Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and the Grand Sports Tourer R Class. This system’s features are beneficial for occasional off-road use or when pulling a trailer. The Hill Start Assist not only helps when maneuvering in off-road terrain, but also on the road – such as in stop & go or on an incline.

The new models also feature Adaptive Cruise Control first-used in the S-Class. The system determines the distance and speed of the car in front. If this distance becomes too short, the system actively reduces the speed by intervening in the engine electronics and brake system.

The cars will also be fitted with Continental Tyres. The ContiCrossContact UHP, characterised by its short braking distances and high cornering stability, the all-season Conti4x4Contact tyre, and for the cold weather time of year the 17 inch version of the Conti4x4WinterContact winter tyre have all been selected as ideal for the new vehicles. The cars will also be fitted with Continental’s Deflation Detection System to provide early warning of any dangerous loss of tyre pressure.

Continental's ContiTech division has also provided parts for the M-Class and R-Class sharing its networked know-how, supplying V-ribbed belts (for the diesel engines), diaphragms for fuel management and fuel lines for the M- as well as the R-Class. ContiTech also provides Roy®-PVC foam leatherette for the seating in the M-Class.
