Runflat tyres for safer driving

The newly launched SSR (Self Supporting Runflat) is the latest innovation in tyre technology to be launched into the market from Continental. As the name suggests, the SSR is a tyre concept that offers motorists vehicle mobility after a tyre deflation, ensuring increased safety in hazardous or potentially dangerous situations.

In the event of a loss of air pressure, runflat tyres will continue to function safely and reliably over a certain distance and at a specified top speed. To achieve this, the sidewalls of the Self Supporting Runflat tyre are significantly reinforced to take the weight of the vehicle in the event of a loss of air in the tyre.

When a standard tyre loses a great deal of air, the rim presses onto the collapsed sidewalls with the full weight of the vehicle. The vehicle can barely be manoeuvred and the tyre is destroyed.

SSR tyres have sturdy, reinforced sidewalls that support the rim in the case of air loss. Special material compounds also prevent the tyre from overheating.

Should you experience a tyre puncture, the SSR tyres will enable you to continue driving for up 50 miles at a maximum speed of 50 mph. In many cases, this will enable you to reach your intended destination or at least make it to the nearest garage or tyre dealer.

Continental SSR tyres are fitted as standard to the BMW 1 and 3 Series and are offered as a safety option on many other car models.

Important safety information relating to SSR tyres:

  • SSR tyres may only be fitted to vehicles equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system
  • Continental SSR tyres can be fitted to most standard wheels.
  • SSR tyres should not be mixed with standard tyres on a vehicle.
  • SSR tyres which have been used in a deflated condition are subsequently not suitable for repair.
