Tyres – Keeping It Green
|
30.07.2008 Emissions occur during all stages of a products life cycle – from procurement of raw materials through manufacturing to usage and recycling. Fleets are having to become more aware of the impact a product has on the environment before it reaches their premises. With carbon footprinting becoming common place, suppliers green credentials are almost as important as their own so fleets must choose their products carefully.
In the tyre usage itself, there are two key things to look out for. The first is low rolling resistance. The less resistance a tyre has; the less energy it takes to move a tyre along the ground. With a reduced rolling resistance of 30% over the SC15 it replaced, Continental’s SC20 will save fleets both money on electricity or fuel and helps lower their CO2 emissions by an average of 5%. The second key point is mileage. The more mileage a fork lift gets out of a tyre, the less tyres used, the less tyres disposed of and made. In developing the SC20, Continental gave the tyre 20% extra tyre life over its predecessor the SC15. The new CSEasy SC20 can boast a further 20% more mileage thanks to its special design – taking the total saved to 40%. The CSEasy, which can be fitted without a mounting press and specialist fitting equipment, also saves on downtime and fitter call outs. Making good product choices especially when it comes to tyres can save significant money and lessen their impact on the environment. |
