What is ContiSeal?

A ContiSeal tyre differs from a non-ContiSeal tyre in that it has a sticky, viscous layer from shoulder to shoulder along the inner-liner. This layer is an integral part of ContiSeal tyres. It is not designed or intended to act as a permanent puncture repair (see information below).

If an object up to 3/16" (5 mm) diameter penetrates the tread of a ContiSeal tyre, this sticky, viscous layer is designed to surround and adhere to the puncturing object and prevent air loss from the tyre by providing a near instantaneous seal. If the puncturing object becomes dislodged from the tyre, the material is designed to seal most holes made by objects up to 3/16" (5 mm) diameter. While ContiSeal tyres significantly reduce the incidence of flats, they are not designed to be driven under inflated or in a flat condition. In all other aspects, ContiSeal tyres perform exactly like non-ContiSeal tyres.

Using tyres with ContiSeal

As with any tyre, motorists should regularly inspect ContiSeal tyres for evidence of cuts, punctures, and loss of inflation pressure. At a minimum, ContiSeal tyres should be inspected once or twice a month and always before a long trip. Punctures or damage not attended to promptly can result in the loss of inflation pressure and/or damage to the tyre. ContiSeal tyres with cuts and punctures must be inspected by a trained tyre specialist as soon as possible. The trained tyre specialist must inspect the tyre carefully and, according to industry standards, determine whether a permanent repair can be made or whether the tyre must be removed from service and scrapped. A permanent repair will require removal of the tyre from the rim and application of a repair method specifically approved for sealant tyres. The tyre repair specialist, Rema TipTop has developed and approved instructions for the repair of ContiSeal tyres which can be found at the top of this website as pdf-download.

Even though ContiSeal significantly reduces the incidence of flat tyres, the driver should be alert to any changes in dynamic performance such as increased noise, vibration or changes in handling. Such changes could be an indication that one or more of the tyres should be inspected immediately and if necessary removed from service.

ContiSeal tyres are identified by a symbol on the tyre sidewall:

ContiSeal tyres and non-sealant tyres may be mixed on the same vehicle.

Dealer information

The sealant in ContiSeal tyres is designed to seal punctures in the tread from objects no larger then 3/16” (5mm) diameter. Thoroughly inspect the tyre according to national industry standards.Carefully remove any object from the tyre tread.Even if the tyre seals, if it is punctured, the tyre must be removed from the rim and inspected carefully according to industry standards to determine whether a permanent repair can be made or whether the tyre must be removed from service and scrapped.A permanent repair will require removal of the tyre from the rim and application of a repair method specifically approved for sealant tyres. The tyre repair specialist, Rema TipTop has developed and approved instructions for the repair of ContiSeal tyres which can be found at the top of this website as pdf-download.

Storage of ContiSeal tyres

ContiSeal tyres should be stored under the same conditions as recommended for non-sealant tyres.

Due to the sticky nature of the sealant, do not place any objects or material inside the tyre as they may become stuck and subsequently difficult to remove without damage to the sealant.

Fitting of ContiSeal tyres

In aspects such as mounting, demounting, inflating, and balancing, ContiSeal tyres do not differ from non-sealant tyres.

Disposal of ContiSeal tyres

ContiSeal tyres can be disposed of in the same ways as non-sealant tyres.

Health and Safety

Avoid eye contact and prolonged skin contact. Remove from skin with normal industrial hand cleaners.
