Why fit winter tyres?

• Only winter tyres offer maximum safety at low temperatures. Already from temperatures below + 7°C they are superior to summer tyres. the use of special rubber compounds is what gives winter tyres their suppleness in the cold, so that unlike summer tyre compounds, they do not harden, but remain elastic and grip well even at low temperatures.
• Taking into account the low temperatures, winter tyres also brake better in the wet than summer tyres, providing they have a minimum tread depth of 4mm. When there is snow on the road, the superiority of winter tyres is even more obvious. numerous fine grooves - referred to as sipes - in the tread provide hundreds of edges that interlock with the road surface in winter and ensure good grip.
• Modern winter tyres are as quiet and comfortable as summer tyres and do not wear any quicker, thanks to sophisticated silica compound technologies.
• Advances in tread pattern design mean that winter tyres are as attractive in appearance as summer tyres.
• The accident risk is six times higher in the winter than in the summer. And in Germany that can work out expensive, because if you are involved in an accident in the winter, even if you are not at fault, if your car is fitted with summer tyres you will be given 20% of the blame. Finland and Sweden have gone one step further - there, motorists have to fit winter tyres by law.An extra little tip: Some insurance companies offer special reductions if you fit winter tyres.
