When to fit winter tyres For many motorists, the first snowfall is what reminds them of their winter tyres. To avoid annoying waiting times and bottlenecks in supplies, it is a good idea to think about changing your tyres well in advance. Depending on where you live and what you use your car for, this can be any time between early October and early November. At that time of year the temperatures can fall very sharply at night and it would probably already be too cold for summer tyres. The point is that when the temperature drops below +7°C, summer tyres tend to go hard. As a result they lose the suppleness required to build up sufficient grip for starting off and cornering in particular. The tread compound on winter tyres stays supple and grips well even at low temperatures. So for optimum driving safety, it makes sense to fit winter tyres as soon as the first frost appears.
