“It’s a terrible disappointment for us. Zidane’s sending off was one of the key turning points in this match, as was Vieira’s substitution due to injury. In the final stage of extra time, when we were dominating the match, we had to make do with ten players. That’s a really sad chapter”, French coach Raymond Domenech commented. |

The World Cup victory was of particular importance to the Italians. Parallel to the last World Cup week, the alleged bribery scandal discovered before the start of the World Cup, was on trial. Eight players with champions Juventus Turin were in the squad and faced the possibility that their club would be banned and relegated into the third division. A further six players were from Lazio Rome and AC Florence, threatened with relegation to the second division. But because of the fantastic success of the national team, more and more people in Italy advocated that the Juve players should not be punished just because their club was involved in the scandal. “This victory is incredibly important, because it will keep for eternity. I am experiencing an indescribable joy”, said Francesco Totti, whose club AS Rome was not involved in the affair. Gennaro Gattuso, AC Milan’s midfielder, thanked the World Cup hosts: “At the end of this adventure I would like to express my congratulations to the German people. All people I met during the last month were incredibly friendly, respectful and polite”. After that a great night of celebration began for the Italians, before they were triumphantly received by their fellow-countrymen in Rome on Monday. |
