Fusing two average football teams isn’t always a sensible idea. But it has worked really well in FC Midtjylland’s case. Formed in 1918, the Danish club Herning Fremad played mostly in the second division, or the first division as it’s called in Denmark. If they did happen to be promoted to the top league, they were usually relegated pretty soon afterwards. Though better known and more successful Ikast FS only had modest financial resources. Ikast is a suburb of Herning, a small town in central Denmark. Founded later in 1935, FS even qualified once for the UEFA Cup before the fusion. It was the biggest achievement in the club’s history. But both Jutland clubs wanted more. They wanted to establish themselves permanently in the top division, the so-called “ Super League” and to reach an international competition, if possible, on a regular basis. Since 1 July 1999, the new club “trades” under the name FC Midtjylland. As the club’s logo includes a wolf, the Danes have been nicknamed the “Ulvene” (Wolves). Midtjylland showed their claws right away in the first season of their existence. They were immediately promoted to the Super League where it also didn’t take long for them to get going. Placing fourth gave them the right to play in the UEFA Cup qualifying round and the hurdle was overcome with style. Against the Northern Irishmen from Glentoran, the “Wolves” moved into the first round with consummate ease. But then the internationally renowned Sporting Lisbon proved to a bit more than they could chew. The biggest footbaling achievement was celebrated a year later. After coming third in the Super League, the club advanced to the second round of the UEFA Cup which was also the end of the line as Belgium’s record champions RSC Anderlecht were too good for them. Midtjylland were on the European map and results were going their way domestically. In 2003 the club reached the cup final but then had to acquaint themselves with the role as fair losers. Perhaps things would have been different if they hadn’t lost their strongest player to a Bundesliga club. Morten Skoubo moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in August 2002 adding in the process 2.5 million Euro to the bank account. In the meantime the striker is back playing in the Super League. When returning for the first time to his old home with his new club Brøndby, he must have been just as fascinated as others were upon seeing Midtjylland’s new stadium. The SAS Arena – SAS also sponsor the Super League – is a gem of a stadium. Officially opened in 2004, the stadium has seating for 12,500 spectators. Since the Wolves started playing in the stadium, the average attendance has rocketed from 3,000 to 8,000 per game. The arena enables Midtjylland to strengthen its position behind Denmark’s leading clubs, Brøndby and FC Copenhagen. The playing side of things is managed by coach Erik Rasmussen. The former Danish international led the team to an impressive second place before the 2004/5 season’s winter break. This was made possible by Mohamed Zidan’s eleven goals. It was to be feared that such a dangerous goal-scorer could not be concealed from Europe’s big clubs for very long. The Egyptian was transferred in the winter break to the German champions Werder Bremen. Midtjylland additionally lost its Danish international goalkeeper to VfL Bochum. Rasmussen, a lover of attacking football, has a lot of work ahead of him. The recent history of Midtjylland however encourages one to believe something sensible will come of it. |
