It was Continental's partnership with the international football association FIFA that focused the attention of sports fans worldwide firmly on the company. However, the Hanover-based automotive supplier and tire manufacturer was not just one of the exclusive 15 companies designated as Official Partners who were using the 2006 FIFA Football World CupTM and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 for advertising and marketing purposes. In recent years, the Continental company, whose experience in football sponsorship as a Partner of the UEFA Champions League from 1995 to 1999 had already been positive, has become one of the leading sponsors of European football. This position was further reinforced by the announcement in January 2006 that the company would be working in partnership with UEFA as an Official Sponsor of UEFA EURO 2008TM, to be held in and in June 2008. In this context, the foremost longer-term objectives of the company remain the same - to increase international awareness of the premium tire brand Continental, to give the brand image a more emotional appeal, and at the same time to create greater awareness of the Continental Corporation overall and intensify its business relationship with its partners in the tire trade. In the medium term, the aim is also of course to increase tire sales.
