The performance of a rubber compound depends heavily on the type of rubber and reinforcement materials used. Carbon black is the most commonly used reinforcement and filling material for rubber (this makes tires black). Instead of carbon black either silica or sometimes chalk can be used when colored tires are desired. Therefor the use of special silane is needed to increase the bond of silica to rubber, this is called activation.
