Investment Agreements Signed / Cornerstone Laid for New PLT Tire Plant in Kaluga

11/29/2011

  • State representatives from Kaluga region present for cornerstone laying ceremony – Construction began already in November 2011, production launch set for end of 2013

  • Continental making initial investment of around €240 million in Kaluga plant for annual capacity of 4 million tires, further expansion envisaged in near future

Hanover / Kaluga, November 29, 2011. Continental continues to focus on growth with a special investment program of more than €1 billion in the Tire division. Representatives of the Kaluga government today attended the signing of investment agreements in the order of €240 million for a new plant in that region. An official ceremony accompanied the cornerstone laying. The event set the course for turning out the first passenger and light truck tires on schedule by the end of 2013. “We are extremely confident that the new plant in Kaluga will do a lot to give us long-term market leadership in Europe. We view Russia as one of the future’s most significant single markets, with substantial double-digit growth rates in vehicle registrations. We intend to consolidate our position here as a top tire manufacturer in the original equipment and replacement business,” explained Nikolai Setzer, head of the Tire division and Member of the Continental AG Executive Board.

The strong growth anticipated in Russia is closely associated with the vehicle industry’s targeted strategy of setting up production sites there. It has already seen a number of international automakers and automotive suppliers establish production facilities in Kaluga. The central Russian government in Moscow and the local authorities in the Kaluga region have pledged their support for the new Continental passenger and light truck tire plant. “We are delighted that Continental – one of the three largest automotive suppliers worldwide – is opening a new tire plant in Kaluga in addition to expanding the plant for engine control units and other electronic components,” said Maxim Akimov, First Deputy Governor of the Kaluga region. “With leading international automakers and automotive suppliers setting up factories in the region, we want to ensure that in the long term Russian cars, too, will be fitted with state-of-the-art technology manufactured locally.”

In the coming years, Continental aims to achieve above-average and profitable growth, particularly in the emerging markets. Aside from Russia, Continental is also expanding production capacity in Brazil, the U.S. and Europe to serve increasing global demand better on an extended basis. Production got going at the first passenger and light truck tire plant in Hefei, China, in the spring of 2011. At the same time,

acquisition of the cross-ply tire manufacturer Modi Tyres in India provided the basis for a local plant for radial commercial and passenger and light truck tires in the region.

Continental’s long-term plans in Kaluga will allow for build-up of annual capacity to eight million passenger and light truck tires in the near future. At the new plant, Continental will primarily manufacture summer and winter tires under the Continental, Gislaved, Barum and Matador names. These are the key corporate brands on the Russian market.
