• Tyre was produced specifically for the VW Passat CC at the plant in Lousado (Portugal)
• ContiSeal tyres allow for a continued journey even after a puncture to the tread layer
• The technology is now used on many vehicles and the trend is rising 

Hannover / Lousado, 31.05.2011. Today in the Continental tyre plant in Lousado the two millionth tire with ContiSeal technology has been built.

The 235/45 ZR 17 dimension tyre will be mounted on a Volkswagen Passat as original equipment. Continental has been manufacturing car tyres with ContiSeal technology since 2008. These tyres are sealed with a viscous mass that is mounted on the inside of the tread layer. In case of punctures by nails and screws the resulting hole is immediately closed without pressure loss and the journey can proceed trouble-free.

Even holes that were caused by objects up to five millimeters in diameter can be closed. Around 85 percent of flat-tyres are avoided.

The leading European tyre producer initially developed the technology exclusively for the flagship of the Passat range, the Passat CC. Meanwhile, Volkswagen are mounting ContiSeal tyres also in the Sharan, Passat and Eos models.

The tyres are manufactured in 8 sizes and are used in both the original equipment and replacement markets. Continental expects the approval to come during this year for original equipment from other manufacturers.

In Lousado Continental annually produces around 15 million passenger car and van tyres of the group brands Continental, Uniroyal, Semperit and Barum. Around 1,600 people are employed at the plant and the factory is a major employer in the region.
