Broad range for AWD vehicles - New Continental tire for the AT segment

06/08/2004 Continental AWD Tires for Extra High Demands (Hanover / Essen, June 2004) With the six models in the AWD tire family – including the ContiCrossContact AT with a tread pattern suitable for operation on- and off-road – owners of off-road vehicles are superbly equipped when out and about. In point of fact, Continental has structured its range of tires with the requirements of these vehicle owners very much in mind. The Conti4x4Contact, for example, was developed for suitability on roads and easily navigable terrain, the Conti4x4SportContact is intended above all for fast, agile SUVs that also operate on the road. The models in the ContiCrossContact family all have a particular focus: The AT offers unsurpassed grip in on- and off-road service, while the ContiCrossContact UHP is suitable for AWD vehicles with powerful engines. The ContiCrossContact LX is ideal for use primarily on the road, although it also allows for moderate off-road use. New: the ContiCrossContact AT The new ContiCrossContact AT was developed for all drivers intending to use their AWD vehicles off-road but in the market, nonetheless, for a comfortable margin of safety in road traffic. Development also took into account the requirements of AWD owners planning on using their vehicles for off-road sport activities. By giving the tire an open shoulder, developers of the new ContiCrossContact AT managed to endow it with good handling characteristics on rugged terrain. As a result, the tire not only bites into loose terrain but also provides for safe cornering performance on stretches difficult to navigate. Thanks to an especially sturdy tread compound, off-road jaunts are highly unlikely to result in material injury and notching and the tire can be expected to give good mileage. When used on asphalt roads, the tread´s three rows of blocks in offset arrangement enter the contact patch in asymmetric fashion so that the tire rolls very quietly and comfortably in comparison with other tires in the AT segment. The new ContiCrossContact AT is available with white sidewall lettering in most sizes. It will go into production with twenty sizes immediately available in the 15 to 17-inch range and approved for speeds of up to 190 km/h. |

The ContiCrossContact UHP Continental has just the right tire in its range for especially powerful AWD vehicles - the ContiCrossContact UHP. Its performance characteristics - e.g. short braking distances and enhanced cornering stability - are geared explicitly to the requirements of AWD vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5. To satisfy special tire fitment requirements, the tire type is also available in a 23- and 24-inch version. It thus covers a large portion of the retrofitting and tuning demand in the speed classes V, W, Y and Z (for speeds in excess of 210 km/h to a maximum speed of 300 km/h). The ContiCrossContact LX The asymmetric ContiCrossContact LX with its open outer shoulder offers good handling and braking properties even on easy terrain. This is obvious from the tread pattern styling, which incorporates design elements of tires for rugged off-road service. On asphalt the ContiCrossContact LX provides precise steering response and very good straightline tracking. Three circumferential ribs with block rows in offset arrangement and conspicuous siping make for good handling characteristics and quiet tire/road interaction. For pleasurable AWD motoring: the special Conti4x4Contact, Conti4x4SportContact and ContiTrac SUV tires The Conti4x4Contact offers excellent traction on the road and on easily navigable terrain. The tire guarantees prompt steering response and a high degree of directional stability. The tread blocks in offset arrangement generate only minimal rolling noise, while the tire´s wide tread grooves in longitudinal and traverse direction greatly reduce the risk of aquaplaning. The Conti4x4Contact is suitable in particular for compact and medium-weight cars. For powerful and fast AWD vehicles, Continental recommends the Conti4x4SportContact, which is approved for speeds of over 240 km/h. Its asymmetrical tread pattern, with a compact outer shoulder area, provides for especially high cornering stability. The tire´s wide tread grooves efficiently expel water on rain-slicked roads and thus effectively thwart the aquaplaning risk. Thanks to the offset arrangement of the tread blocks, the tire rolls quietly. The ContiTrac SUV, with its computer-optimized tread pattern, gives medium to heavy AWD vehicles good grip on the road and on easily navigable terrain, applications for which it is primarily designed. Its qualities are geared to the size and weight of American and Japanese AWD vehicles. Characteristic for the tire are its good handling and mileage performance and its minimal rolling noise. Thanks to reinforced sidewalls, this tire also offers ample protection from any damage to the sides of the tire. The ContiTrac SUV is available in a wide range of sizes with rim dimensions of 15 to 17 inches. The Continental tire for AWD vehicles is factory-mounted as original equipment on the Porsche Cayenne and other vehicles. |
