Tailor-made winter tires for the compact category:

09/12/2005 The New ContiWinterContact TS 800 Frankfurt/Hanover, September 2005. With the ContiWinterContact TS 800, Continental has managed to enhance the handling characteristics on dry roads as well as on wintry streets thanks to the advanced engineering of tried-and-tested concepts. This has been made possible by increasing the size of the well-known honeycomb sipes, which are now designed for extra stiffness on dry roads and additional biting edges for driving on snow. Their directional design enables a further improvement in handling characteristics to be achieved on wet roads and snow slush. Here you can download the press release as a doc-file (58 KB). Reengineeering of the honeycomb sipes featured on the ContiWinterContact TS 780 has led to improved tire performance characteristics on dry and typical wintry roads. By increasing their size – in some cases even doubling the size – the stability of the sipes has been enhanced. This improves the handling properties especially on dry roads. Thanks to the directional tread pattern, the grooves between the tread blocks in the shoulder area can be designed asymmetrically, with the angles of the opposing tread block flanks differing – one flank at an angle of two degrees and the other 20 degrees. This asymmetry makes the tire tread even stiffer, thus shortening the braking distance on dry roads. Another advantage of the directional design is the faster draining of snow slush and water from the tire tread. Tires incorporating these new design features enable drivers to handle typical winter weather conditions such as sleet or rain much more easily. As a consequence, the safety-related tire characteristics have also been enhanced: When it comes to handling, the ContiWinterContact TS 800 delivers about five percent improvement compared with its predecessor, and its braking distance on wet and icy roads has been reduced by as much as six percent, with the mileage performance going up five percent. The ContiWinterContact TS 800 is therefore a tailor-made winter tire for vehicles in the compact category; its short braking distances and excellent handling properties allow it to perform impressively on all wintry roads. The new ContiWinterContact TS 800 will be replacing its tried-and-tested predecessor, the ContiWinterContact TS 780, starting from the coming winter season.
