Since its foundation in 1911, Tsinghua University has rapidly established itself as one of China’s most renowned comprehensive research institutions with a strong commitment to basic research, applied research, and scientific innovation. The university comprises 13 schools and 53 departments with facilities in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art.

In a recent national assessment by China’s Ministry of Education, 37 disciplines of Tsinghua University were assessed. Among them 13 disciplines ranked first and 25 ranked in the top three. There are 27,600 students studying in Tsinghua. At the graduate level Tsinghua offers 123 doctoral and 159 master’s programs. In all, more than 13,700 graduate students currently matriculate, including hundreds of foreign students from 70 countries.

As a major research institution, Tsinghua administers 11 State Key Laboratories and 14 Ministry of Education Key Laboratories. The number of laboratories of Tsinghua totals up to 170. In 2004, Tsinghua’s faculty continued to rank first in China for publications in scientific journals (SCI, EI and ISTP) and was awarded 537 patents on scientific achievements.

The graduates of Tsinghua are now playing important roles in China’s economic development. The academics of Tsinghua alumni accounted for 28.3 percent of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 17.4 percent of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
