Apex Applicator for Passenger Car Tires

Applying two apexes to wire bead cores

APEX Machine

The APEX 13" - 18" machine applies a rubber apex to two metallic, wound bead cores with rightangled contours in one single semi-automatic process.Capable of handling beads up to a range of 22; the machine is clearly adapted to the strong trend towards larger tire sizes.Usually, the apex applicator is supplemented by an upstream apex extruder which is integrated into the overall control engineering concept.

Principle of Operation
The extruded double apex strip is fed via the takeoff conveyor and the cooling drum to the 4-roll accumulator and cut by a slitter. The two ensuing strips are then transported by a tray servicer to a building drum.
Two metal bead cores are fed in manually on plastic material carriers (so-called separators), conveyed automatically to the building drum and positioned by means of a rubber bladder.
A steep central bead is produced as a result of bladder shaping; the apexes are applied in pairs to the metal bead cores that have been fixed by the bladder, and pressed against the separators.
On deflation of the bladder, the bead cores now covered with apexes can be removed manually together with the separators.

Modules
The entire machine consists of the modules described below which are set up in an in-line arrangement.

Handles more than 5 pairs of bead cores per minute

Take-Off Conveyor
The take-off conveyor takes the double apex strip from the extruder head die and conveys it to the cooling drum.

Cooling Drum
The drum is filled with circulating water; its job is to precool the double apex strip and feed it to the 4-roll accumulator.

4-Roll Accumulator
The accumulator station regulates the continuously extruded strip on four overhung-mounted and individually driven diverter rolls during the operating sequence at the apex applicator.

Tray Servicer
The tray servicer with cutter ensures that the apexes are cut to length precisely in accordance with the specification. A pick & place facility as well as a pressure-exerting function make sure that the strips are correctly positioned on the building drum and that their ends are pressed together (spliced) properly.

Apex Applicator
The latter processes already take place on the apex applicator. Moreover, the bead setting device takes up two bead cores with separators and positions them automatically on the building drum. This building drum is a size-dependent tool driven by the main shaft of the apex applicator.

Tools
Each set of tools consists of a building drum, bead holding tongs and in-feed roller conveyors. The machine takes tools ranging from size 13" to 18".

Machine Control

Electric control functions are designed in conformance with latest EN guidelines. The machine processes are carried out by an industrial PC. The operator has command of a central desk with logically arranged function elements and a monitor. All controls make it easy to edit the more than 100 recipes, machine data and parameters. Operating and fault signals are displayed to help with troubleshooting. The machine's safety system is built up of hardware circuits that run independently of the control functions.

The following modes of operation
are possible:

  • Semi-automatic operation
  • Manual operation
  • Setup and maintenance operation

Accessories

  • Bladder assembly device
  • Carriage for the building drum

Optional Extras

  • Extruder with head
  • Separators (bead core carriers)

Layout
The machine can also be supplied as an off-line version (without the take-off conveyor, cooling drum and 4-roll accumulator) to fit in with the customer's specific production requirements.
