The Flood of the Century –
Forty Days Against the Deluge

Continental donates money for a destroyed children's park and affected families - reopening in September 2004

Flut 2002

Flood of the century in Germany – Continental helps victims and rebuilding programs. Under the slogan “40 days against the deluge” employees from all locations gave donations from August 21 to September 30, 2002. The money received was matched one-to-one and then rounded up by the Company. Thus in Hanover, we could hand a check for more than 450,000 euros to the Chairman of the German Workers' Welfare Association, Dr. Manfred Ragati and Thomas Müller, Managing Director of Kindervereinigung Dresden e.V.

The money donated was distributed by the Workers' Welfare Association to individual projects: Half of the donation went to the Muldenufer children's park in Trebsen, Saxony, an initiative of Kindervereinigung Dresden e.V., to rebuild the completely destroyed park. In September 2004 the new recreation and education center Grillensee was opened in Naunhof in the district of Muldentalkreis. The new center holds around 100 beds on 45,000 square meters. This is a place for vacations, schools in the country, youth camps, and youth education meetings. Families use the center as well. “We are glad that our donation could greatly contribute to rebuilding a place for children and young people to have trouble-free vacation and education”, said Richard Köhler, then Works Council Chairman at Continental. “It is also nice for all the co-workers who took part in the action to see what their donations have made possible.”

The other half of the donation went to supporting families affected by the flooding. In addition to financial help, numerous Company employees also showed their readiness to help with individual actions.
